Boston Planning Board is established.
January 27, 1914
Authorized by the Massachusetts legislature in 1913, it is one of only 14 boards in U.S. cities. The city ordinance that establishes the board requires that it “shall consist of five members, one of whom at least shall be a woman.” Members appointed by the mayor, subject to confirmation by the Boston City Council. Ralph Adams Cram is the first chairman. Membership of the board is altered over the years, and at one point includes seven members, the mayor, and the City Council. The board is eliminated and its responsibilities assumed by the Boston Redevelopment Authority in 1962.*
